A three part lecture series at the Asiatic Society, Mumbai
There is much more to the city of Mumbai than its colonial history. The city that was famously given away in dowry was teeming with life for millennia before the event and naturally therefore, it had a treasure chest of stories—myths, folklore and legends apart from an eclectic mix of beliefs and practices. All of this together build a picture of a city that is remarkably different from the modern-day image of a metropolis that dominates popular imagination.
The Mythology Project recently conducted a three part lecture series on the other Mumbai, the Mumbai that has long faded into the shadowy recesses of public memory for Asiatic Society of Mumbai.
Our talks covered the ancient stories that characterised the city and are an integral part of its oral and documented lore. They explored the city’s mythical moorings and tapped into the symbolism and the hidden stories that form its cache of myths and legends.
Our three part series covered the shifting geographical contours of the city and how that influenced its mythology, it looked at the earliest inhabitants of the region and their ideas about nature, divinity and life that gave birth to folklore and it traced the stories and legends that framed the religious systems that drew sustenance from the merchant classes of the region.
